MILFORD TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Police are investigating after a toddler was shot and killed on Monday in Milford Township, Bucks County.

The boy has been identified as 2-year-old Benjamin Austin Smith.

Officers were called to a home in the 2100 block of Kumry Road at 11:05 a.m.

There, they found Smith with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

Smith lived there with his father Nicholas Wyllie and his paternal grandparents.

Wyllie was the only person in the house with the child at the time.

Initial word from police on the scene indicated this could be an accidental shooting.

However, the Bucks County District Attorney's Office has not released any details about how the shooting occurred.

The father has been questioned, investigators say.

There was no word on if any charges were being filed.

Joseph Sokolofski , the crime section commander for Pennsylvania State Police Troop M, says his troopers investigate a lot of grizzly scenes, but nothing really prepares you for cases like these.

"It's extremely difficult. In fact, the trooper on scene has a 2-year-old. We all have children," Sokolofski said, "So that makes this much more difficult."
