NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Pennsylvania SPCA stopped an active dog fight in North Philadelphia.

Officers found one of the dogs already dead on the 600 block of West Diamond Street on Sunday.

They rescued eight other dogs, including one that was seriously injured.

The SPCA is now nursing them back to health.

They note the dog that sustained the most critical injuries was named George, in honor of the late George Bengal, "whose many accomplishments included breaking up a dog fight in progress."

In the meantime one suspect is in custody, but police are looking for a number of other people who fled the scene.

All tips can be left anonymously through the PSPCA's cruelty hotline, 866-601-7722.
