BLACKWOOD, N.J. (WPVI) -- Firefighters battled an apartment fire in Blackwood, Camden County Sunday evening that displaced 22 people and injured a police officer.

Officials said it started in an apartment building along the 500 block of Lower Landing Road around 8:30 p.m.

Firefighters reported arriving on scene to heavy smoke showing from the building.

A police officer burned his hand while helping people escape. He was taken to Virtua Voorhees Hospital where is expected to be OK.

None of the residents were hurt.

The Red Cross is helping 22 people, including nine children, forced out of their homes.
