Wendall Smallwood primed for breakout year: Jeff Skversky reports during Action News at 6 p.m. on July 21, 2017

Philadelphia Eagles running back Wendell Smallwood is trying to make a big leap in his second NFL season.

One hundred percent healthy from the knee injury he suffered last year, Smallwood is ready to break out in a big way. And he's added to his offensive toolbox after spending the offseason working heavily on pass-blocking and conditioning.

He'll have some tough competition after the team revamped its ground attack. The Eagles signed NFL rushing touchdown leader LeGarrette Blount and selected FBS all-time leading rusher back Donnel Pumphrey in the draft this offseason.

"Some people can ignore it, but it's definitely motivation for me to get better," Smallwood said of the Eagles' crowded backfield. "With that competition in the room, it's driving everyone in that room."

After all of the roster changes the Eagles made, Smallwood believes they're ready to make a run.

"I definitely think we go worst to first with all the work we've put in and the guys we've brought in to make the team better," he said.

Nobody wants to see this happen more than the Wilmington, Delaware native who grew up a big Eagles fan.

"I've been living in the pain," Smallwood said. "I've been wanting one. For me to do it on the team, and finally get our first Super Bowl, I think it would be a dream come true."
