Delaware Legalizes Medical Marijuana Option for Children
Rylie's Law adds intractable epilepsy & dystonia to approved treatment list
DOVER, Del. (WPVI) -- Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed a bill Tuesday legalizing a form of medical marijuana as a treatment option for sick children.
Physicians will be able to write certifications for marijuana based-oils for minors under 18 years old.
The bill (read full text) defines marijuana oils as either "Cannabidiol oil," which is a processed Cannabis plant extract that contains at least 15% cannabidiol but no more than 7% of the active ingredient THC, or "THC-A oil" which is a processed Cannabis plant extract that contains at least 15% tetrahydrocannabinol acid but not more than 7% tetrahydrocannabinol.
The oils at this potency do not contain enough active ingredient to get someone high, according to state officials.
They are intended to relieve symptoms and pain from illnesses varying from cancer to HIV/AIDS.
The new law adds intractable epilepsy and dystonia to the list of approved conditions for treatment with marijuana oil.
It is known as Rylie's Law, after Rylie Maedler.
Her family and she were on hand for the bill signing.
