2 drivers hurt in DUI crash involving school bus in New Castle, Delaware

NEW CASTLE, Del. - Two drivers are hospitalized after a crash involving a suspected drunk driver and a school bus in New Castle, Delaware.

It happened at 6:30 a.m. Friday on Boxwood Road at Ahlers Boulevard.

Police tell Action News the school bus was waiting to pick up students when a maroon Mazda sedan driven by a 19-year-old woman crashed into the rear of the bus.

No children were on board the bus at the time.

Driver hurt after slamming into school bus


The driver of the striking vehicle was trapped for about 30 minutes as crews worked to rescue her.

She was taken to an area hospital in serious but stable condition with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The 47-year-old bus school bus driver was also taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have determined that alcohol use was a factor that led the driver of the Mazda to hit the school bus.

Charges had not yet been filed as of noon Friday.
