    HOW TO APPLY FOR AN INTERNSHIP

    6abc/WPVI-TV has a variety of internship opportunities available year-round to currently enrolled college juniors and seniors, 18 years of age or older, pursuing careers in television, broadcasting, journalism and other related fields.

    Our internship program is designed to provide students with an educational experience that compliments their academic studies and provides an opportunity to observe and participate in the daily work and operation of the television station. Our objective is to enhance the student's understanding of the broadcasting business, production systems and to reinforce their desire to further pursue a career in broadcasting.

    Internship Application Procedures

    In order to apply for an internship with WPVI, you must submit the following:
    1. One copy of your resume outlining any other internships, certifications, work experience, related clubs and organizations, current major course of study, expected graduation date and extra curricular activities.
    2. Cover letter which must include:
    • Personal introduction
    • Department you would like to intern for (Click here for details)
    • Statement verifying eligibility to receive school credit for internship
    • Your schools beginning and end dates for the semester during which you wish to intern
    • Days and times available during internship period

    Submissions must be received at least six weeks prior to the start date of the semester in which you wish to participate in the internship program. Submissions are accepted as far as six months in advance and evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis.

    CREATIVE SERVICES - PROMOTIONS DEPARTMENT

    The Creative Services - Promotion Department serves as an in-house advertising agency for WPVI-TV/DT. Interns will have the opportunity to observe and participate within a fast-paced and creative operation that includes producing news, programming and special events promos, as well as executing the graphic look for the station and maintaining the station's growing web site. The Creative Services - Promotion Department also creates station advertising in other media, including print, radio, outdoor, and interactive. Successful intern candidates will be involved in all facets of the creative execution — research, concept, and creation (pre & post-production).

    Creative Services - Promotion Department Interns must work a minimum three days per week. They can work up to a maximum of 5 days or 37.5 hours a week. Interns may work days, nights, or a combination that fits their school, work or personal schedules. Interns are not paid, and must receive academic credit from their college or university for their internships. Internships are available for the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters.

    CREATIVE SERVICES - DESIGN DEPARTMENT

    The Creative Services - Design Department serves as a full-service production facility for all aspects of the station. Interns will have the opportunity to observe and participate within a fast-paced and creative environment that includes producing graphics and animations in support of news, programming and special events. Intern candidates should be highly motivated and possess a working knowledge of Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Autodesk Maya experience is a plus, but not required.

    Creative Services - Design Department Interns must work a minimum three days per week. They can work up to a maximum of 5 days or 37.5 hours a week. Interns may work days, nights, or a combination that fits their school, work or personal schedules. Interns are not paid, and must receive academic credit from their college or university for their internships. Internships are available for the Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall semesters.

    CREATIVE SERVICES - SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING DEPARTMENT

    Are you a news junky who watches TV, Facebooks®, and blogs at the same time? This could be the perfect internship for you! Interns will have the unique opportunity to learn how Action News and 6abc execute an online marketing strategy and stay connected to its most trusted and loyal viewers through the power of social media. Interns will contribute to creating and producing dynamic daily content to populate our various social media platforms.

    Ideal candidates must be proficient at capturing, encoding, and converting video/image files using a number of different industry standard programs. Basic photography skills, and Final Cut Pro© editing experience is also helpful.

    Social Media Marketing Interns must work a minimum of three days, with a maximum of five days or 37.5 hours a week. Evening and weekend shifts are required. Interns are not paid and must receive academic credit from their college or university. Internships are available for the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters.

    DIGITAL SALES DEPARTMENT
    Interns will serve as Digital Sales Coordinators/Assistants for all digital campaigns. Interns will have the opportunity to work hands on in a fast-paced broadcast environment. They will be involved in all aspects of digital ad sales and publishing, including campaign conception, presentation, execution and optimization. Specifically, interns will learn:

    Booking: Checking inventory and book web and wireless campaigns via ad serving systems for video, display and mobile.
    Creative: Requesting and tracking assets (images, logos, copy) for all digital campaigns; work with in-house designer and external agencies/clients to collect creatives; review assets to ensure they meet spec.
    Competitive Research: Spending time on competitive websites researching existing advertisers, special promotions, new ad opportunities, etc.
    Digital Research & Metrics: How to utilize different industry-standard research tools to create monthly digital data updates.
    Recaps: Collecting screenshots of active line items and compiling them into a deck for client review; pull ad serving results and organize into Excel spreadsheets.
    Social Media: Checking that client-focused 6abc FunStuff Facebook and Twitter promotions are properly executed.

    Digital Sales interns are not paid, and must receive academic credit from their college or university. They can work up to a maximum of 5 days a week or a minimum of 3 days.

    FINANCE DEPARTMENT

    WPVI-TV's Finance Department is seeking an intern to learn various general accounting tasks and special projects including assistance with accounts receivable and cash application, accounts payable, billing, balance sheet account reconciliation, variance analysis, and month-end/quarter-end close processes.

    Qualifying candidates will be enrolled in a bachelor degree program with an emphasis in Accounting.

    Finance Interns must work a minimum of 22.5 hours a week in 7.5 hour workday blocks. They may work up to a maximum of 5 days or 37.5 hours a week. Interns are not paid and must receive academic credit for their internship. Internships are available for all semesters.

    MARKETING DEPARTMENT
    Interns in the 6ABC Marketing Department will have the opportunity to learn a variety of roles, serving as an assistant to the Marketing Manager and Marketing Coordinator.

    Marketing Interns will learn how to develop and coordinate:

  • Station campaigns through researching interesting topics important to the community, writing and interacting with various departments at the station.
  • Promotions
  • Event Planning
  • Script writing and production for corporate and station videos

    The marketing internship would allow for direct interaction with all departments at 6ABC including Sales, News, Research, Public Affairs and Creative Services.

    The intern needs to possess communication/interpersonal skills, basic computer skills and an excellent command of the English language. Writing skills are a plus.

    Interns can work up to a maximum of 5 days a week or a minimum of 3 days. Hours can be worked out with individuals' schedule. Interns are not paid, and must receive academic credit for their internship.

    PROGRAMMING and PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT

    Production interns serve as production assistants for three video news magazines (FYI Philly, Visions, and High School Huddle), two reality shows for the Live Well Network (Knock It Off! & Sweet Retreats), various studio shows, and other special projects. Duties include:

    • Location Shooting- Interns accompany field crews on location, operating videotape deck, audio gear, lighting, microphones, and generally helping photographers and producers in setting up and striking shoots and interviews, including hands-on experience with the equipment. Interns will have the opportunity to observe and participate within a fast-paced and creative operation that includes regular programming and a variety of specials.
    • Transcribing Tapes- Viewing footage, taking accurate notes for producers, writing down video and audio from tapes for later review and editing.
    • Program Research- Handling viewer requests, press releases, guest preparation, topical and video research, interview confirmation, fact-checking, script assembly, filing video and transcripts.
    • Office Assistance- General production help, such as answering phones, clipping articles, copying scripts, assisting in organizing material for producers. Also work on projects for the Director of Public Affairs, such as researching certain topics, combing files, and collecting data.

    Interns must work a minimum of 22 hours a week in 7.5 hour workday blocks. They can work up to a maximum of 5 days or 37.5 hours a week. Interns are not paid, and must receive academic credit from their college or university for their internships. Internships are available for the Winter/ Spring, Summer and Fall semesters.
