Wurst was heading back to police headquarters at 11:45 Wednesday night when his cruiser was struck by a sports utility vehicle making a left into a bowling alley at Delsea Drive and Lexington Avenue.
The police car then went up an embankment and hit a tree. The officer was trapped and unconscious. Another patrolman, Victor Bianco, was following behind and rushed to Wurst's aid. Barbara Wurst believes he may have saved her son's life.
The driver of the SUV was 19-year-old Andrea Patton of Sewell. She suffered a broken leg.
Police said the roadway was wet and the investigation is continuing, but it does not appear that drugs or alcohol played any role.
