McCain gets endorsement

COLUMBIA, S.C. - January 12, 2008 - South Carolina's largest newspaper, The State, is endorsing the Arizona senator, saying he has the "necessary experience" and "quality of understanding" to be president.

The State also says Republicans could "do far worse" than pick Mike Huckabee whom they described as "an exciting newcomer who shows a wonderful ability to connect with voters' concerns." But the newspaper's editorial board says Huckabee's "utter lack of knowledge of foreign affairs is unsettling."

The editorial page editor of the newspaper wrote on his blog, the state should have endorsed McCain in 2000 when he faced George Bush in the primary. He says this time, they've "done the right thing."
