Day care worker faces prison for sexual assault

READING, Pa. (AP) - January 4, 2008 Twenty-five-year-old Samuel Ervin was given a 36- to 88-year sentence Thursday in Berks County Court as his parents and more than 40 relatives and friends of the child victims looked on.

Ervin pleaded guilty in July to raping two 3-year-old girls and sexually assaulting four girls, ages 2 to 10, over a more-than-two-year period.

Ervin was fired in June 2006 after the charges were filed. The building where the day care was operated by Trinity United Church of Christ in Mount Penn has been sold. Mothers of two victims have filed lawsuits against the day care and the church seeking a total of more than $1.5 million.
