TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - It could have been a holiday tragedy for a Cape May City family when their new puppy ran off after a car accident. But thanks to the extra efforts of a New Jersey Turnpike Authority worker, the incident has a happy ending.

Pete and Leigh Fager had been franticly searching for their 13-week-old chocolate Labrador retriever, named Charlie. He ran away Sunday following a car accident on the Garden State Parkway in Brick.

The couple got the dog as an early Christmas present for their 2-year-old daughter.

But with no sign of Charlie after three days and freezing temperature overnight, they started thinking he wouldn't be found.

But they got word yesterday that Charlie was found in the wooded median near the accident scene.

John Regan and some other authority workers gave the puppy food and water and took care of him until Pete Fager was able to arrive.
