South Phila. school, closer to making music

South Philadelphia - January 23, 2008 - The South Philadelphia Lions Club presented checks totaling 1-thousand dollars to Saints John Neumann-Maria Goretti High School.

Every bit helps. Earlier this month, at least 70 of the school's 100 instruments were ruined or seriously damaged by water.

It happened over the weekend when a heater valve at the school failed and water gushed out. They floated in the water for 48 hours. Violins and violas literally popped apart from warping.

The damage was estimated to be $75,000. There is insurance, but that is still being worked out. Meanwhile, Alumni led the drive to raise the $1,000 to help the cause and help spark similar efforts.
