Senate leader touts lottery lease

BELLMAWR, N.J. (AP) - January 28, 2008

Meanwhile, Senate President Dick Codey says he has another idea: Lease the New Jersey lottery to a private operator.

Codey says a private operator could have far greater marketing and programming resources. He says leasing the lottery would help the state reap billions of dollars.

Corzine says he won't dismiss the idea. But he has doubts over what he describes as the "long drawn-out process" of getting voter approval to lease the lottery.

More than a dozen states are considering leasing lotteries to private investors, though no state has done so.
