End of checks for property rebates?

TRENTON, N.J. - February 7, 2008 - Treasury Department officials are meeting at Thomas Edison State College in Trenton to discuss whether the checks can be turned into credits on property tax bills.

A decision is expected within a week.

While turning the checks into a tax credit has been the goal, officials have said creating such a credit system has proven complicated.

The checks also serve as a reminder from elected officials.

New Jersey has the nation's highest property taxes.
