HAZLETON, Pa. -February 7, 2008 The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee accuses the
Republican mayor of favoring the privatization of Social Security
and "gambling with our seniors' retirement savings." That's a
line of attack Democrats hope will resonate in a district whose
population is largely elderly.
The 11th District in northeastern Pennsylvania has kept
Democratic Congressman Paul Kanjorski in office for 12 terms.
Kanjorski defeated Barletta in 2002 by more than 13 percentage
points. But this time, Barletta has the advantage of a national
profile because of his hard-line stance against illegal
immigration.
