Philadelphia police residency rule loosened

PHILADELPHIA -February 11, 2008 Officers will still have to move into the city within six months after they graduate from the Police Academy.

Until a change announced Monday, prospective officers had to live in the city for a year before they entered the academy. Also, the old policy required people to have Pennsylvania driver's licenses before entering the academy. Now, they must get a Pennsylvania license within six months of graduation.

Mayor Michael Nutter says the old policy was a major barrier to recruitment.
