Philadelphia police residency rule loosened

The Philadelphia Police Department is now welcoming applicants who live outside the city. Officers will still have to move into the city within six months after they graduate from the Police Academy.

Until a change announced Monday, prospective officers had to live in the city for a year before they entered the academy. Also, the old policy required people to have Pennsylvania driver's licenses before entering the academy. Now, they must get a Pennsylvania license within six months of graduation.

Mayor Michael Nutter says the old policy was a major barrier to recruitment.
