Sweet roses for Valentine's Day

February 12, 2008 After years of travelling the world, DeSilva settled down in South Jersey and opened his own bakery in Voorhees, New Jersey. The creations he makes at Simplicity Desserts are beautiful. He says that is what sets a pastry chef apart from people who just bake cakes.

This time of year, the chef also creates roses from sugar. It's a little something he started as a tradition at home.

The process is a lot like making candy.

Special sugar is boiled to a precise temperature, and color is added. The mixture is cooled on a marble slab and worked by hand. When it is the right consistency, petals are pulled one-by-one.

Then, the flower is assembled using just a little heat from a torch.

Handled with care, one of these roses will be a lasting reminder of your love.
