The real-life story of a black college in Texas whose debate team made a national name for itself in the 1930's was the hands-down big winner last night. "The Great Debaters" captured all but one of the major movie awards. It won for best picture. Lead actor and director Denzel Washington won for outstanding male actor, Jurnee Smollett won the lead actress award and Denzel Whitaker captured the honor for supporting actress.

Whitaker dedicates his award to his family, particularly his grandfather, who couldn't make it to the Shrine Auditorium for last night's event. Denzel Washington says he's honored to receive the award, but is even happier that the young stars of the movie are getting the recognition they deserve.
