It's cats vs. birds in Cape May
CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) - February 19, 2008 And there could be some ruffled feathers tonight.
The City Council is set to take up the issue of whether to move
feral cats from beaches where endangered shore birds nest. The cats
are as much a part of the Cape May culture as the rainbow-colored
Victorian houses. But Cape May is also one of the prime
bird-watching spots in all of North America. The council is
considering a compromise that would preserve cat colonies but move
them away from sensitive beaches. The federal government is
threatening to ax badly needed beach replenishment money if the
city refuses to move the felines.
