Officer attacked by suspect

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - February 19, 2008 The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. near the 1100 block of Utica Street in Allentown.

According to police, Officer Christopher Hendricks, 47, spotted a group of young people doing graffiti in the area.

Police said Hendricks had arrested two people and as he went to arrest the third person, they got into a scuffle.

That suspect allegedly struck Officer Hendricks several times in the head with a blunt object. He also grabbed for the officer's gun and there was a struggle. The gun fired, but the bullet went into the ground.

Officers trying to catch other suspects heard the shot and ran to Hendricks' aid. They managed to get the situation under control.

Hendricks was taken to the hospital. He was being checked for possible head trauma.

Another officer was taken to the hospital with a broken hand.

A suspect was also taken to the hospital for injuries.

Police say all suspects have been taken into custody.
