Police say Angelo Zayas was shot in the upper chest and was taken to Christiana Hospital in critical, but stable, condition.
The shooting occurred shortly before 3 a.m. outside a home on Pepperwood Lane in the Bear area. Police say the officers had gone to the address for a report of an armed, intoxicated man fighting with a woman. The woman fled the home, leaving her three children inside.
According to police, Zayas left the house, saw the officers and retrieved a muzzleloader from his car. He allegedly refused repeated orders to drop the weapon.
The officers are on administrative leave while authorities investigate the shooting.
