Driver blamed for school bus crash

RIVERDALE, MD. - February 27, 2008

The bus carrying middle school students overturned Wednesday when the driver made a turn too fast, slightly injuring five children, authorities said.

The bus, carrying 44 students from William Wirt Middle School, toppled onto its side a few blocks from the school shortly before 9 a.m., said Cpl. Stephen Pacheco of Prince George's County police.

Five students were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries that Pacheco described as "bumps and bruises." The remaining students and the driver also were taken to hospitals for precautionary evaluations.

The driver will be charged for taking the turn at a "speed greater than reasonable," Pacheco said. Specific charges had not yet been determined, according to police.

Riverdale is just northeast of Washington.
