An actual tree will grow in Brooklyn for author

NEW YORK (AP) - February 27, 2008 New York's parks department plans to plant a serviceberry tree outside the Brooklyn Public Library branch believed to be the inspiration for the one in the 1943 novel "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn."

The novel's author was Brooklyn-born Betty Smith. She'll be honored at the Leonard Branch on Thursday. Smith's daughter is scheduled to speak at the ceremony about her mother, who died in 1972.

"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is about a girl's childhood in a poor neighborhood. It has sold millions of copies and has been made into a movie.

The small flowering and berry-producing tree will be planted later this year as part of the parks department's goal to plant a million trees by 2017.
