Pa. eyes new mission for Willow Grove base

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. (AP) - March 3, 2008

The report says Pennsylvania could work with the military to make it a joint military installation.

Officials say it would be used for defense, homeland security and emergency preparedness.

Under the proposal, the military would lease part of the 1,300 acre base to the state.

The Defense Department plans to close the base by the fall of 2011.

The federal government's Base Realignment and Closure Commission voted in August 2005 to close the air station. It's about 15 miles north of Philadelphia.
