N.J. tax rebates now face budget ax

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - March 5, 2008

State Republicans say that shows last year's rebate checks were an election-year ploy.

Democrats say nothing is safe from budget cuts, given the state's dire financial outlook.

Governor Corzine has proposed giving senior citizens and households earning less than $100,000 the same amount this year. But households earning more would see thinner checks or nothing at all.

Property taxes rose 5.4 percent last year, breaking through a legislative cap meant to hold taxes down.

Homeowners pay an average of $6,800 in property taxes, or roughly twice what homeowners in most other states pay.
