Harrisburg, Pa. - March 6, 2008 -
Twelve candidates - nine Republicans and three Democrats – are competing for the state's only open congressional seat, which is in
north-central Pennsylvania.
The candidates seeking to replace
retiring Republican Rep. John Peterson include elected officials, business owners, a journalist and Iraq war veteran and the great-grandson of a well-known bakery founder. There is no clear
front-runner.
ALSO NOTEWORTHY:
In northeast Pennsylvania, Republican businessmen Chris Hackett
and Dan Meuser are already running TV ads against each other as
they compete for the opportunity to challenge Rep. Chris Carney, a
freshman Democrat in a heavily Republican district.
