The child was playing with a handgun Friday afternoon when it discharged and wounded 26-year-old Amal Moallin.
A police supervisor says they're trying to figure out how the semiautomatic handgun ended up in the boy's hands. They're not saying who owns the gun.
Charges being considered include endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.
Prosecutors say there's no chance the boy will face charges, as state law prevents prosecuting children under age 10.
