UMDNJ cuts 1/3 of pediatricians

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey is slashing its pediatric department because of money problems.

University officials say they will not renew the contracts of 18 pediatricians - or more than one-third of the faculty.

Department acting chairman Kendell Sprott tells The Star-Ledger of Newark it's possible some or all of the termination letters will be rescinded once the university's 2008-09 budget is approved.

If not, the doctors say the cuts will hurt families.
