Phillies beat Cleveland, 6-4

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - March 17, 2008 Rollins and Utley, who both came into the game batting below .200, had run-scoring singles in a five-run second inning and the Phillies beat the Cleveland Indians 6-4 Monday.

Rollins, Utley and center fielder Shane Victorino helped the top three spots in the Phillies lineup finish 6-for-7 with five RBIs. Starting catcher Carlos Ruiz was 3-for-4.

"We're gaining on them, aren't we," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel joked of his team, which is now just 7-12-1 in Grapefruit League play. "We were all right (offensively). Today was a pretty good day."

While the offense sizzled, Chard Durbin kept his name in the mix for the vacant fifth starter's job. Durbin allowed three runs on four hits in five innings, striking out one while walking two, to earn the win.

"I'll go out there and do what they tell me to do and whatever happens, happens," Durbin said. "If everybody's pitching well and we're healthy, then we're in good shape."

Despite giving up 11 hits and six runs in four innings, Cleveland pitcher Cliff Lee was content with his performance.

"As far as locating pitches and throwing my off-speed stuff, I felt good," Lee said. "I threw a couple pitches that hit a little too much of the plate for the counts that I was in and they got hits. "For the most part, a lot of the hits they got, I threw the pitch right where I wanted to."

Indians catcher Victor Martinez hit his first home run of the spring in the ninth inning off veteran reliever Tom Gordon.

Notes:
Philadelphia optioned C Jason Jaramillo to the minor league camp and reassigned INF Brennan King and C Pete Laforest to the minor league camp. ... Former Phillies MVP Ryan Howard, hitting .349 this spring, was 0-for-3 with a strikeout. ... Keeping up with a tradition started by the late Tug McGraw, the Phillies wore Kelly green hats and jerseys to commemorate St. Patrick's Day.
