Mother charged with leaving newborn in toilet

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - March 26, 2008

Twenty-seven-year-old Melissa Regalis was arraigned Tuesday on charges of reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say Regalis gave birth to a boy last Aug. 30 at the Bethelehem home of the child's father. Regalis called 911, but police say she refused the dispatcher's instruction to remove the baby from the water.

Police say the child's father found the infant sitting in an upright position in the toilet bowl, submerged to his chest. The baby was treated for hypothermia and an infection. He's now in the care of a foster family.

Regalis declined comment. She's free on $35,000 bail.
