Survey: One in ten voters botch Obama's religion

WASHINGTON, D.C. - March 27, 2008 - One in 10 respondents in the nonpartisan Pew Research Center survey indicated they mistakenly believe Obama to be Muslim, while just over half correctly identified him as Christian.

The mistaken impression appears across party lines, with 14 percent of Republicans, 10 percent of Democrats and 8 percent of independents polled saying they think he is Muslim. About a third of the respondents said they don't know his religion.

The false rumor that Obama is Muslim has been fanned on the Internet and conservative talk radio. And it has persisted despite the recent controversy over divisive remarks by his former pastor.

The poll of 1,500 adults has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
