Neighbors fear hog farm expansion

DELTA, Pa. (AP) - April 1, 2008

David and Eric Gemmill have received a permit from the state Department of Environmental Protection for the expanded operation on their 120-acre farm in Peach Bottom Township.

Residents like Laura Yanney say the farm is upwind of homes, and residents are worried about odor, runoff and groundwater contamination from the hog farming operation.

DEP officials say the Gemmill family has an odor management plan, intends to build a concrete manure storage structure and meets standards to prevent groundwater contamination.

The Peach Bottom Township zoning hearing board still must approve the plan. The board is expected to decide on May 6.
