Dozens of dead animals found in house

BARNEGAT, N.J. - April 7, 2008 Bag by bag, SPCA officers removed dozens of dead animals from a house.

"Many of them are still in the cages they expired in," said SPCA officer Thomas Yanisko.

For hours animal control officers dressed in hazmat gear searched the home at 21 Potomac Court.

They found dogs, cats, ferrets, guinea pigs and other animals in various stages of decomposition in every room of the house.

"Without a doubt, they suffered. I'm sure from starvation, they were in agony," said Lt. Patrick Shaffery.

Investigators say the couple that lived here moved out a few months ago.

The house was foreclosed. A locksmith working for a mortgage company discovered the remains this morning.

Barnegat Police Chief Arthur Drexler told reported that 50 to 100 dead animals were found inside, although he also said that the extent of decomposition is making it difficult to count them.

Property records show that Matthew and Amanda Teymant purchased the house for $141,000 in October 2006, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Investigators said Matthew Teymant is a police dispatcher in Toms River, New Jersey. They were looking to speak to the couple.
