3rd attack in Center City subway

CENTER CITY - April 5, 2008 Mayor Michael Nutter is promising action and it can't come soon enough, because the perception among commuters is that so far, nothing's being done.

Police say it was about 11:30 Friday night when a 30-year-old man riding on the westbound El train was attacked and robbed by 3 black males wearing wigs. The victim only had $20 on him when he was attacked. He flagged down officers who rushed him to Hahnemann Hospital with cuts and bruises to his face and head.

Just this past Wednesday, a 24-year-old mother of 2 children was pummeled to the ground knocking her teeth out moments after stepping out of the subway and into the Gallery. So far, only 5 of her 12 teenage attackers have been arrested.

One of those charged in the case tells Action News he's innocent.

"They was fighting, and we broke it up, nobody touched the other girl, we only touched the people that we knew. We grabbed them, and broke it up," said Stanley Poland of North Philadelphia.

Poland, who says he's received all sorts of awards, trophies and $1000 scholarship from the Police Athletic League, says they were down there buying T-shirts in memory of their friend Taron Brown who took his life Tuesday. They were memorializing him with the phrase "Watch Your Mouth," a music video he sang.

Taron Brown's father, Darrell says, "Watch your mouth is a song that was performed by my son, and some of his teenage friends. It is not any way shape or form gang related."

Meanwhile, /*Mayor Michael Nutter*/ was trying to downplay the latest subway attack. "It seems to be, you know, just these aberrant, isolated incidents. The subway system overall, and elevated train service, is very, very safe," said the Mayor.

Mayor Nutter says we should see a difference by next week. Even so, commuters are very much on edge.

The Mayor seems to be listening.

Again, to reiterate, the mayor says commuters should see a difference by next week. Anyone who knows the whereabouts or otherwise have more information on the 3 black males wearing wigs said to be between 20 to 30-years-old to call police ASAP.
