Chess teacher accused of scam

Dozens of Delaware families say they were scammed by a man offering after-school chess lessons for children at schools in the Christina and Appoquinimink school districts.

The parents say 21-year-old Christopher Hackford kept their money and didn't show up for most of the lessons. He has not been charged in Delaware but has been charged with running similar chess scams in Melrose and Newton, Mass.

The Delaware schools allowed Hackford to send home fliers with students offering the lessons, and they gave him permission to use school classrooms after hours for the classes. State law does not require background checks for vendors who enter a school building outside of the school day.
