Retired vet spends much of his day lounging

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) - April 14, 2008

But she doesn't mind.

She and her husband adopted Benny when his 10 years of duty as an Air Force drug dog came to an end.

Benny provides some welcome company while Debbie's Air Force captain husband Mike is overseas.

Benny also visits veterans in V-A hospitals and provides them some comfort.

Kandoll says she's wanted to adopt a retired military dog since it became legal in 2000.

And for Benny, the Kandolls came along just in time.

The News-Argus of Goldsboro, North Carolina, reports he had been scheduled to be put to sleep last November when the Kandolls found him.
