Need a used car? Call the Berks D.A.

READING, Pa. (AP) - April 14, 2008

But Michael Gombar says he had no choice after finding out that the District Attorney's office owns 51 vehicles for 28 detectives.

Gombar says he'd rather be out fighting crime, but he has to sell the vehicles to get rid of the waste. He says he's learned a lot about Blue Book values.

Records indicate 39 of the vehicles were bought with state funds and money seized in drug and other cases. Officials say a dozen others were seized in drug cases.

District Attorney John Adams says he was shocked by the discovery. He says he wants detectives "out solving crimes, not cleaning vehicles."

Gombar says he has sold seven vehicles for a total of $35,000 and expects to sell six more. The money is being used to buy new uniforms, bulletproof vests and surveillance equipment.
