The prosecutor had sought a sentence of 25 to 50 years for 21-year-old Rokie Torres because of the brutality of the crime. Berks County Judge James Bucci says he gave a shorter sentence in part because he wants Torres to have a chance to make something of himself after he leaves prison.
Torres denied hurting the girl, but was convicted Nov. 1 of third-degree murder, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was sentenced Friday.
