Shippensburg grad student treated for meningitis

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - May 18, 2008

The student was admitted to the hospital Saturday. Officials say she had minimal contact with members of the campus community before becoming ill.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. It is contagious through close contact with an infected person, and can be fatal.

Most Shippensburg students have finished classes for the year, but the school's summer term begins Monday. The school says the ill student attended a campus ministry program May 15 with about a dozen other people.
