Jersey Shore preps for holiday weekend

OCEAN CITY, N.J. - May 19, 2008 Another season is about to unfold at the Jersey Shore and while there is some concern about the economy and gas prices, merchants are hoping the weather warms up and Memorial Day weekend will be a good start.

Preparations are underway in Ocean City for the onslaught of holiday visitors.

But getting to the shore from out of state isn't cheap. Everyone here is waiting to see if high gas prices and a faltering economy effect vacation plans.

Karen Morella and her sister Deb Soutar were sprucing up Morella's Bed and Breakfast. She's accepting 3 night minimums and has 4 of her 5 rooms booked for Memorial Day weekend. She's optimistic.

Karen says, "My season is actually looking good. I'm ahead of where I was last year. So, that's always a positive sign."

It wasn't much of a beach day today and come to think of it there wasn't much of a beach in ocean city's north end. Shore towns suffered severe erosion in last week's unusual may Nor'easter. Ocean City is starting a planned replenishment project to 12th Street and is expected to last until July 4th.
