Philadelphia death row inmate kills self

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - May 29, 2008

The death of 46-year-old William Tilley is the second suicide in a week at the State Correctional Institution in Greene County.

Tilley was convicted of killing Philadelphia police Officer Robert Daiss during a July 1985 burglary of the officer's Northeast Philadelphia home. Tilley maintained that he shot Daiss in self-defense after the officer confronted him with a gun.

His lawyer, Billy Nolas, says Tilley had won a new sentencing hearing and that an appeal was in progress on whether he should get an entirely new trial. Nolas says Tuesday's suicide shows his client became despondent.
