Brew comes from the edge of space

TOKYO (AP) - May 30, 2008

Japanese brewer Sapporo is making suds with barley descended from grains that traveled aboard the International Space Station.

A Sapporo spokeswoman says the first test run of 100 bottles will be ready in November.

The barley seeds spend 5 months in orbit as part of an Okayama University experiment on the effects of space travel on plants.

So far, the researchers say the space grain looks just like it never left home. Sapporo doesn't plan on selling the space beer.
