Teen killed in Drexel Hill trolley accident

DREXEL HILL, Pa. - June 1, 2008 It happened around 11:30 last night on Hillcrest Avenue in Drexel Hill. The boy was hit by the Route 102 Sharon Hill trolley.

Hours after the accident the case was puzzling for investigators. They had to figure out what happened and then who died on these tracks. When detectives arrived on scene the victim had no I.D.

Upper Darby Superintendent Michael Chitwood says, "The SEPTA driver claims he sees something on the trolley tracks and goes over it... and then he thought something was wrong and stops."

After releasing the boy's clothing and asking for the public's help, police were able to identify the victim this afternoon. Due to his age and out of respect for the family, we're not releasing his name.

Police are still trying to understand why the Drexel Hill Middle School student was on the tracks.

"It looks as though he was laying on the tracks prior to the SEPTA trolley hitting him over going over him," explained Chitwood.

Autopsy results reveal the boy died of blunt force trauma. Toxicology tests won't be completed for several weeks.

Action News spoke with the victim's mother. She says it was an accident - that her son was walking a friend home and went to use the bathroom. That's when she believes he was accidentally hit.
