Former city official's son arrested for assault

PHILADELPHIA - June 1, 2008

The suspect is Joe Vignola Junior - son of Joseph Vignola Senior, former city councilman and controller in Philadelphia.

Sources say the alleged victim, an 18-year-old senior at Kensington High School, booked a room at the Motor Inn. In a 3rd floor room, police say Vignola bound and slashed the victim across the throat.

The two reportedly had met several times.

Police say the victim made two 9-1-1 calls from her cell phone. Based on that information, police were able to get a search warrant.

The victim initially told police she was raped, however Vignola has not been charged with a sex crime.

He faces Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Restraint and other related charges.

Vignola Jr. was arrested on Saturday - his 19th birthday. Bail was set at $250,000.
