Pizzeria owner killed in attempted robbery

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - June 3, 2008 It was closing time last night around 11:00, when a masked gunman walked into Carnival Pizza at the intersection of 23rd and Clearfield and demanded money.

44-year-old Aly ElKaied was shot and his enraged staff tackled the gunman and held him by putting a kitchen knife to his neck.

ElKaied was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

23-year-old Cordell Adams of the 3000 block of North 21st Street was arrested.

He was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say the weapon used in the crime, a Glock 380 caliber, was recovered at the scene.

At the victim's home, they mourned an Egyptian who worked long hours and dreamed to be successful.

Neighbors hugged ElKaied's employees outside the pizza shop. The victim was remembered as someone who liked his customers and went out of his way to help.
