Pregnant woman dies after stray bullet shooting

PHILADELPHIA - June 3, 2008 The gunfire erupted last night, and the 26-year-old woman was in exactly the wrong place at the wrong time.

The victim was on life support Monday while doctors determine what to do with her four-month-old fetus. Sadly, she passed away early Tuesday morning.

It began with an argument between several young men in the playground behind the Queen Lane Apartments. Police say the victim's boyfriend, Michael Thomas, was one of them and he's the one who started the deadly chain of events.

Capt. James Clark of the Philadelphia Police told reporters, "The victim's boyfriend then goes into the apartment he gets a gun, a shotgun, fires outside of the window at the males. And one of the other males, Lamar, fires back in the window, hitting the female, striking her one time in the head."

Police say 26-year-old Bobbie Booker was walking past the window when she was shot in the head. They say the bullet was fired by 22-year-old Lamar Johnson, one of the men involved in the argument. Both he and Thomas have been arrested and charged with two counts each of attempted murder and aggravated assault on both Booker and her unborn child.

This is the same housing project where a housing authority cop was shot in February. Residents say the violence is constant and the kids can't even use the playground.

"That's upsetting. It's really upsetting, and all this needs to stop," said Tanya Smith.

Vaughn McBride of Germantown says, "She was a beautiful person. You know? So... it's just crazy what's going on out here."

Investigators told Action News on Monday that if Booker and her unborn fetus pass away, Thomas and Johnson could each face two counts of murder.
