Police in Alexandria report Leon Jeffers accidentally shot himself while showing his girlfriend how to handle a gun.
They were sitting in a car in a fast-food parking lot.
Jeffers told investigators he had forgotten he had just reloaded his pistol.
He squeezed the trigger while trying to put the gun in the driver's side door panel.
He shot himself in the upper thigh.
Police say Jeffers told them he is ex-military and very embarrassed.
