Liquor bottles lead to lost courthouse

LA PLATA, Md. (AP) - June 10, 2008

Just follow the booze.

Archaeologists from St. Mary's College of Maryland have found the remains of a 17th-century Colonial-era courthouse.

Historians have been searching for the original Charles County courthouse for 75 years.

It seems judges and other officials used to throw back plenty of liquor while in court.

Students looking for the courthouse were to able to narrow their search by tracking the remnants for liquor jugs and drinking glasses.

Anthropology professor Julia King says the historic find gives us a glimpse of how colonists lived and drank.
