More Philadelphia pools open

PHILADELPHIA - June 17, 2008 Here in the Bridesburg section of the city the pool opened Tuesday afternoon with a countdown and then Mayor Michael Nutter joined some children in taking the plunge.

These kids love a swim in the summertime.

In Hunting Park, there was no swimming, yet. This pool wasn't quite ready to open. A big dose of chlorine should turn it from green to blue by tomorrow.

By June 30th, all of the city's 78 pools will be open and in business to keep the city's kids cool.

"Pools are located in just about every neighborhood, to help people keep cool during the summer months. People can come to our pools," the mayor said.

The pools are opening on a staggered schedule, and the city is still hiring lifeguards to staff the pools through the summer season.

Here are the five pools opening Tuesday.

  • Fox Chase @ Rockwell and Ridgeway
  • Bridesburg @ Richmond and Ash streets
  • Vogt @ Cottage and Unruh
  • Francisville @ Francis and Shirley
  • Hunting Park @ 9th and Hunting Park

People can call the city recreation department to find out the opening of the pool in their neighborhood.
