Local college announces $3 million gift

READING, Pa. (AP) - June 19, 2008

Alvernia College says it will use the money from Jerry and Carolyn Holleran to establish the Holleran Center For Community Engagement.

Jerry Holleran says it's an opportunity for students to understand that "serving our fellow man" is "an extremely important part of our American way of life."

Alvernia President Thomas Flynn started the Center For Community Engagement in 2006 to help students serve the community.

It also offers community programs like a free leadership lecture series and youth camps, all which are expected to grow under the Holleran name.

The Hollerans are not alumni of Alvernia but both have served the college as trustees for a combined 16 years.
